The Red Tornado averaged just 8.3 points per game in 2014 en route to a disappointing 0-10 record. McCaskey also gave up an average of 40.5 points per game and will have to find a way to bridge the gap to be competitive in 2014.
“We were all young and we didn’t really have a leader last year,” senior receiver Kyaire Bynum said. “I was supposed to be a leader but I was still young and wasn’t as mature as I am now. I definitely take some of the blame for it.”
McCaskey is returning a duo of playmakers in seniors La'detrius Sibley and Bynum who both did a little bit of everything for the Red Tornado in 2014.
Heading into 2014, Bynum believes the starting quarterback job will be handed over solely to fellow senior Brandon Allen.
“He (Allen) grew a lot from last year,” Bynum said. “Last year was his first year starting at quarterback and he learned a lot. I’m sure he will do OK.”
With stability at quarterback, Bynum and Sibley can fall back into their comfort zones at receiver. The Red Tornado offense is also getting another shot in the arm with junior tailback Randolph Speller, who rushed for 244 yards on 49 carries at Lancaster Catholic last season.
“Everyone is very serious. We took last season very hard. We keep it in the back of our heads that we don’t want to feel like that ever again,” Bynum said. “The whole mentality of McCaskey football is different this year.”
