Though they may have flown under the radar a bit, the Black Knights are coming off an impressive 2013 campaign in which they took second place in Section One and advanced the District 3 Class AAAA quarterfinals before falling 17-10 in overtime to Cumberland Valley.

“Our accomplishments last years are last year’s accomplishments but the big thing is the attitude and the effort to get there is something that has carried over to this team,” head coach Ron Zeiber said. “These guys know what it takes to compete and get to the level that we got to last year.”

Hempfield will look to build on last year’s success with returning offensive weapons like senior tailback Devin Washington who led the team with 1152 yards in 2013. Junior Will Blair is also back and will look to continue to throw defenses off with his running and catching ability.

“It all starts at practice with all the guys getting better. We have some new guys coming up on the O-line and while we can’t replace the guys from last year, we have faith in the coaching staff to help the guys coming up,” Washington said.

There will be a new face under center for Hempfield with Mike Edwards graduating and the duties will fall on junior Sam Kramer.

“I’ve had some experience playing the quarterback position through some situations and I’m ready to step forward. I have a lot of weapons around me and I’m looking forward to taking over.”
