Head coach Mike Matta hopes to have his Downingtown East rebound from a sub-par 2013 season. (File -- GameTimePA.com)

Since the Downingtown school split in 2002, East has been a mainstay in the Class AAAA District 1 playoffs, going to the title game in 2006 and making eight district playoff appearances. Last season was disappointing as the Cougars finished with a 4-6 mark and were out of the postseason dance. This year, head coach Mike Matta believes that the frustration of 2013 will serve as motivation for 2014.

“We bring it up all the time to the kids, the coaches and to myself,” Matta said. “We know what a bad feeling last season was and we are using that to motivate us as players, coaches and everybody to not let that happen again. We have some real good leaders on this team ,and a great senior class, so we like our team going into this season.”

“As far as players, I think Cary Angeline is the best to ever play in this Ches-Mont League. He is big, fast, has great hands, just a star. And we have a lot of speed with Danny Chesini, who can really run. We did not have that type of speed last season, so we feel good about that part of our offense. We have a lot of real good athletes on this year’s team. We are athletic at a lot of positions and we can run. We have a junior, (running back) Jack Kincade that really can run and he is a tough, hard-nosed kid.”

The Downingtown East defense gave up a lot of points last season, but Matta thinks the strength of this year’s team -- the linebacking corps -- will reverse last season’s performance.

“We have a real good group of linebackers this season and we think we are strong on both sides of the football up front,” he said. “We will play a 4-3 defense and we will be physical. Caleb Fell is a real good offensive linemen and one of the best kids I have ever coached. Our secondary is strong also with Kevin DeStefano and Justin Cone back there. They were very good last season. We have good athletes back there.”

Matta sees the Ches-Mont National as a very tough division again in which, his team will be in the mix.

“I think West Chester Henderson should be the favorite with a lot of good kids coming back,” he said. “Coatesville has good athletes and Mike Milano always does a great job at Downingtown West. Bishop Shanahan has good skill players and (lineman) Doug Costin will be a force in this league.”

The usual tough nonleague slate awaits the Cougars with Frankford, Roman Catholic, the Haverford School and West Chester Rustin on the docket this season.
